grauraum (gray space)
This little intervention was created as part of “Leerraum” (empty space), an ongoing project to ‘fill’ and activate the former newspaper kiosk “Kiosk.6" in Weimar, Germany.
Smoke is a state between solid and liquid - it’s visible but intangible. It can be associated with mysteriousness, thrill and fear.
I wanted to create a moment between curiosity and danger which draws people’s attention to a place but puts them in a state of disorientation and insecurity at the same time. The kiosk is located at a confusing traffic junction, a place of constant movement and commute in the city of Weimar. The smoke seeping through the kiosk attracts one’s attention and creates a moment of disarray: “What is going on?”, “Should I help?”, “Should I run away?”
